Residential Home – Soft Play Sensory Room

Bespoke home sensory room with full wall and floor padding and soft play equipment.

Designing a home sensory room can make a transformative difference for children with additional needs who benefit from sensory input and structured play environments. In this residential project, we worked closely with a family to create a dedicated sensory and soft play room tailored specifically to their son’s needs.

The goal was to convert an existing room in their home into a safe, stimulating and enjoyable sensory environment, where he could explore sensory activities, relax, and play safely. The finished space now provides a fully padded sensory room where he and his siblings can enjoy interactive play together.

The Brief: A Safe and Stimulating Sensory Room at Home

The family approached us looking to create a bespoke home sensory room that would provide their son with a safe environment to play while benefiting from a range of sensory experiences.

Their key requirements included:

  • A fully padded sensory room for safety.
  • Interactive features that provide visual and tactile sensory stimulation.
  • Soft play elements to encourage movement and physical engagement.
  • A design that maximised the available play space.

Most importantly, the room needed to feel welcoming and fun so that the whole family could enjoy the space together.

Designing the Sensory and Soft Play Space

To achieve the highest level of safety, we included bespoke wall and floor padding into the sensory room design, that covered the entire room. This ensured that every area of the space was protected, allowing the child to move freely and play with confidence.

The padded environment created a soft play sensory room suitable for energetic play while also providing a comfortable space for quieter sensory activities.

To further maximise safety and usability, the room’s doors were designed to open outwards. This allowed every interior wall surface to be padded while ensuring the internal space remained completely open for play equipment.

Sensory Equipment and Soft Play Features

The equipment within the room was carefully selected by the child’s mother to match his specific sensory preferences and developmental needs. Together we created a balanced environment that encourages movement, exploration and sensory engagement.

Key features included:

  • Interactive Sensor Floor – providing responsive visual stimulation through movement.
  • Soft Play Steps, Slide and Podium Set with Infinity Den – encouraging climbing, sliding and imaginative play.
  • Borealis Tube – offering calming visual sensory stimulation.
  • Soft Play Mangle – delivering deep pressure sensory input.
  • Mood Lighting – creating a calming atmosphere within the room.

An exciting addition to the project was a product we had not previously seen used in a sensory room: a light-up peg board. This unique feature acts as both a visual sensory activity and organisational play tool, allowing illuminated pegs to be arranged and interacted with in different ways.

The Result: A Safe Sensory Space the Whole Family Can Enjoy

The completed home sensory room has become a dedicated sensory play space within the home, giving the family’s son a safe environment where he can explore sensory activities and enjoy active play.

One of the most rewarding outcomes of the project is seeing how the room is used by the entire family. His siblings regularly join him in the space, turning it into a shared play environment where they can interact and have fun together safely.

With its combination of soft play structures, interactive sensory equipment and full safety padding, the room provides a space that supports both enjoyment and development.
