Sensory Technology at Linden Lodge School
The Sensory Theatre at Linden Lodge is a state of the art interactive computer controlled room. It features a 10ft projection screen to allow the room to be used for curriculum work, or to show one of the DVDs that has been suplied to help relax the users. The screen & all the effectes are linked into the computer, which gives the supervisor complete control over the system. Different programmes have been set up on the software to allow the supervisors to 'press go' and have all the different elements of the system to activate over a set timeline.
The room includes 2 interactive bubble tubes, lighting effects, fibre optics, a resonance plinth, a water bed and an interactive ball pool to name just a few! All the walls feature softplay padding, and all surfaces - even the control cupboard - have been padded to provide safety for the pupils.
Several bespoke products have been designed for the room including the interactive ball pool which features LED lighting and transparent plastic balls. The users press the coloured squares along the top edge of the padding and the whole pool around them changes colour! The colours can also be mixed with the switches, and when all four are pressed at once by teams of pupils, the pool will start to colour scroll.
The resonance board is another bespoke product in the room. The plinth can be sat on covered in the padding for the users to feel the vibrations of the sound sytem, the padding can also be removed to reveal a real wooden resonance board. This plinth works in conjunction with the sound system in the room as well as being linked to a wireless microphone which can be spoken into by either pupils or supervisors to allow them to feel the vibrations of their own voice.
This room also features a softplay cube switch to control the overall room colour via the LED lights in the ceiling. When the cube is rolled, the side that is facing up sets the colour of the room. A three second shake of the cube will also start a colour scrolling room.
Fibre optics include a harness within the bubble tube plinth and a fibre optic curtain which has been hung over a mirror. Both of these products allow the pupils to closely interact with them for maximum effect. They scroll through the colour spectrum and twinkle along the strands to provide a very interesting effect for the users - a real favourite!
The sound and vision system for the entire Harris Centre is also controlled from the Sensory Theatre. This room uses 2 amplifiers (one for the sound system, one for the resonance plinth), a 6 disk CD player, a DVD player an iPod dock and of course the projector and screen. The system features 5.1 surround sound. The CD players for the softplay area and the darkroom are in the same control cupboard, with an iPod dock and an IR repeater system being installed in each of the rooms themselves. This allows the users to point the remote control at a set point in the room, rather than having to go to the Sensory Theatre to control the CD player and iPod dock.
