Sensory Technology at Linden Lodge School
The Softplay room in 'The Harris Centre' features wall and floor padding as well as softplay steps & a slide. But for that little bit of something special, the room also includes interactive padding. The pupils can press on different parts of the softplay to activate a vibrating pad, random noises or a Solar 250 projector.
The area has a colour scrolling LED panel and colour scrolling LED ceiling tiles, these provide a relaxation effect for an area that can be used for play or to calm. When the pupils tap the front of the screen, the ceiling and the screen change colour in unision.
As shown in the images, the pupils climb the steps onto a raised platform, and slide down the other side. To help out the visually impaired users at Linden Lodge, the edges of the steps and the slide have been highlighted with a yellow fabric, allowing them to see where they end more easily.
The front of the platfrom pulls down to reveal a large storage space underneath, it also includes automatic lighting which switches on when you open the door. This allows for storage of the softplay block bags, physiotherapy wedges and softplay bench which have also been supplied with the system. The room features fold out padding to cover a wider part of the floor if necessary, when not in use, this fold up to create a bench for the users to sit on. Removable pads have also been supplied to cover doorways, allowing the entire surrounding area to be turned into an add on to the softplay room.
At the top of the steps, the 2 black circles represent the interactive padding, the first one vibrates when pressed or leaned on, and the second plays a selection of noises including animals and transport themes. Then, as the pupils get to the top of the slide to go down, this activates the Solar 250 projector, so as they slide, the projector shows the pattern. The wheels on the projector are interchangable to keep the area varied and interesting.
