Sensory Technology at Linden Lodge School
The Sensory Garden area at Linden Lodge has been designed to be truly interactive. With all kinds of different products it has proved a real hit with the pupils. With effects ranging from water features, to musical instruments to shaped mirrors the garden has a real fun feel to it.
The garden appeals to every sense with lots going on to keep the pupils interested. A sound system has been included, which plays through tree trunk speakers throughout the garden, it is linked to a multi disk CD player in an adjoining classroom. This allows a large range of music to be played throughout the day without it haveing to be changed regularly.
A selection of windchimes are placed around the garden from the 'Woodstock' and 'Bamboo Art' range, but as a twist on this popular garden product, a bell and a large free standing gong have also been included. Some of the chimes react to the breeze, to provide a relaxing sound, while the gong and the bell have to be interacted with to make a noise.
Switches included within the garden are a sound switch in a flower - when the user makes a noise into the microphone, bird sounds play, there are also wavey hand, touch and obstruction switches which activate a bubble machine and water features. Leaf chairs have also been included in the installation so the pupils can sit and relax to soak up the atmosphere.
As the school also provides residential accomodation for pupils, the garden also features lighting which looks great when it starts to get dark. A softplay cube with different colours on each side controls the LED cubes that are suspended above everyones heads, allowing the user to change the appearance of the entire garden. LED strip lights where the colours chase each other up and down have also been used to light the garden in the evenings.
