A dark sensory room cuts out all extraneous light, and allows the user to focus on the individual products being utilised. Dark sensory rooms are particularly appropriate for visual assessment, tracking exercises and use with partially sighted clients. The dark sensory room allows a product to be much more vivid against the background, allowing a visually impaired person to see shapes and colours that may otherwise but unobtainable to them.
Focussed areas of light are often included to encourage the client to react to and interact with the sensory products included in the room. Many of the same products as a multi sensory room are incorporated within the design, this can include projectors, bubble tubes and fibre optics.
We can also supply a wide range of custom made curtains and blackout blinds to be used on windows and doors which will cut out a substantial amount of natural light.
UV products are commonly used in this kind of environment; again because of the contrast between the background and the colours. Sensory Technology offer a range of products which will glow in bright, vivid colours when being used with a UV light.
UV areas (also known as blacklight) are not limited to dark sensory rooms alone, if you find you are stuck for space, rooms can be designed to be multipurpose with the option of cordoning areas off for specific work, either via curtains or by building structures within rooms. The image to the left shows a 'Dark Den' that we have constructed within a multi sensory room. The windows in this particular room were also blacked out using window film. This can all be included as a part of our sensory room services!
